A New Leaf for the Looking Glass 2026/27

Dear all, Upon inheriting the Looking Glass from our predecessors, we identified a number of key issues. Firstly, there were simply not enough articles being published, due both to a lack of submissions from the school community and limited responsiveness from the previous Academic Team. Secondly, the Looking Glass had not been advertised or explained effectively enough to the wider school community. As a result, we plan to implement a more consistent and engaging stream of articles on the Looking Glass. As part of this initiative, we are looking to recruit a select group of keen writers from across the lower school who would be willing to produce one high-quality piece of writing, discussion, or media each month for publication on the Looking Glass. We believe this will be hugely beneficial both to the school community, which will gain access to a wider range of opinions and viewpoints, and to prospective writers, who will be able to reference their experience contributing to the Look...

English: “The Red Emerald” – An extract from a book series by Rian Sheth (Year 7)

Note: Below is the opening prologue to the first book in Rian’s book series.

The series includes so far:

1. The Red Emerald: The Beginning

2. The Red Emerald: The Discovery

3. The Red Emerald: The Hidden Threat

4. The Red Emerald: The Flames of War

5. The Red Emerald: The Palace of Darkness

(with 3 more books on the way)

Special recognition should be given to Rian’s initiative and creativity in developing his own book series at such a young age.

For a short summary of the series, Rian describes it as 'a fantasy series that involves a sacred, powerful object called the Red Emerald. When this artefact is found in medieval England, a dark force wants it. The Emerald bearer battles his way through tough obstacles in the hope of freeing the treasure within the Emerald.'

Prologue:

Once, long ago, there was darkness. Not the sort of darkness that lingers in corners that are not yet dominated by light. This darkness was much, much more.

When the earth was first created, darkness surrounded it. A perfect planet for darkness. Soon enough he covered the entire surface of the earth, like a lonely king. Darkness, a giant black cloud, immortal, with the power to create anything.

Once when darkness was cloaking the earth, a bright red light appeared. A crack of hope in the raging storm. Out of the red crevice came a tall elegant man. Seconds after many more cracks appeared on the black sky and soon enough hundreds of human figures appeared. You see in darkness’s sole rage it had unexpectedly created more immortal beings prime to being good. Gods.

These gods then rose from the surface of the earth, and using all their power they fought darkness and trapped it into the skies,

Elated by their success these gods decided to create life amongst our wasted planet and life then endured the vast lands. The gods themselves took it into their own hands that the safety of earth was their responsibility.

Over the years the gods had children whose stories thrived with their own, through centuries their names, looks and myths became changed and remembered by the evolving people of earth.

Well it was not all light. Darkness was a giant matter and it was a matter of time before a drop of it leaked out of the skies and plummeted down to earth. Then it infested the lives of innocent people, corrupting them and through the many periods of time one mortal figure would be taken over by this evil.

The History of ʿIlm al-Kalām

OMAR MURSALIN (Y11) This article placed 1st in the WBGS Fuller Research Prize Competition 2022. In the early generations of Islam after the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s death, Muslims relied on the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ, and their faith was not fortified. The Prophet ﷺ had warned his followers not to delve too deeply into questions about fate and destiny, and his advice gave the earlier scholars of Islam hesitance to tread the waters of theology. ʿIlm al-Kalām or Kalām, is the science of rational theology in Islam. It developed in the first 300 years of Islam due to the translation of Greek books on philosophy and logic by Khālid ibn Yazīd, then later commissioned by Caliph Al-Ma'mun. The purpose of Ilm al-Kalām is to break down the arguments of philosophical doubters of Islam and silence them through a rational basis. The Arabic term “Kalām (كلام)” means speech: There are many explanations for why this discipline was originally called so; one is that one of the biggest controversie...

Complexity for complexity’s sake? The Ars subtilior repertory

MR B. F. EASTLEY, MATHEMATICS TEACHER This essay provides a brief overview of a fascinating period of musical development during the latter half of the fourteenth century, during which some of the most sophisticated music ever written was composed and performed. The ‘Ars subtilior’ or ‘subtler art’ (a 20th century musicologist’s title) is a repertory of several hundred songs by French, Italian, Flemish, and Spanish musicians. This music is quite distinct from other contemporary compositions due to its dazzling complexity in all aspects – particularly rhythmic – but also harmonic, textual, and sometimes visual.

A War Without Witness: The Sri Lankan Civil War 1983-2009

MAGADEV ADAM KUHA KUMARAN L6F When you think of Sri Lanka, you may think of a tropical paradise. A pearl in the Indian Ocean, lined with glimmering beaches and a diverse range of religions, culture and language. However, many people do not realise the dark tragedy that occurred on the island, the pain and suffering hiding under the facade of a paradise. This war is virtually unheard of in the Western world, considering the ongoing ethnic discrimination of Sri Lanka’s minorities (especially Tamils and Muslims). Persecution of Tamil Hindus occurs today to an extent. However, the perceived enemy has shifted toward the Muslim, mostly ethnically Tamil, community, particularly since the Easter Sunday bombings in 2019, which shook the world.
